Just ten minutes before a private jet crashed in Florida, a young co-pilot sent her boyfriend a short message describing what was happening during the flight. Those few words would become one of the most heartbreaking details to emerge after the disaster.
Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, 20, was serving as co-pilot aboard a Learjet 60 travelling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas. According to her stepfather, Thiago Corteleti, she texted her boyfriend Justin at around 12:40 p.m., shortly before the aircraft crashed at approximately 12:50 p.m.
Her message was brief: “I’ve got turbulence, I’ve got ice.”
The same problems were also reported to air traffic control. Recordings reveal that the crew initially described manageable icing and moderate turbulence before the situation rapidly worsened. Less than ten minutes later, they declared an emergency as the aircraft began descending at an alarming rate.
All nine people aboard the jet died.
Nathalia had earned her pilot’s license at just 17 and had already accumulated around 1,300 flight hours. She was only beginning her professional career.
Investigators are examining the aircraft’s final moments and whether ice or other conditions contributed to the crash. No official cause has yet been established.
