Mother of 20-year-old co-pilot in Florida Learjet crash says she ‘predicted’ her daughter’s death

For years, a mother carried a fear she could never quite put aside. She worried that her daughter’s greatest passion might one day take her away. Now, after a devastating plane crash in Florida, those words have taken on a heartbreaking meaning.

Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, a 20-year-old aspiring airline pilot, was serving as co-pilot aboard a Learjet 60 when it crashed near Greenacres, in Palm Beach County. All nine people on board lost their lives.

Nathalia had pursued aviation from an early age. She earned her pilot’s license while still in high school, accumulated around 1,300 flight hours and had worked as a commercial pilot for approximately nine months. Her ambition was to become an airline pilot.

Her mother, Camila Gadelha Corteleti, described her as responsible and hardworking. Speaking about her daughter’s dream, she recalled knowing that flying might one day take Nathalia away from her. She was proud that her daughter had followed her passion, but never imagined the loss would come so soon.

Investigators are examining the circumstances of the crash, including reports of ice accumulation and turbulence. The NTSB has also said the aircraft may have begun breaking apart before impact.
