You’re walking into the bathroom at night when you suddenly notice something small and dark moving across the floor.
For a second, your brain tries to explain it away. Maybe it’s a piece of lint, a hair tie, or some random bit of dirt.
Then it moves again.
Before you panic, there’s usually a surprisingly simple explanation.
Bathrooms are warm, damp environments that can attract small creatures looking for moisture. One common visitor is the earwig, recognizable by its dark body and the tiny pincers at the end of its abdomen. Small spiders and beetles can also occasionally wander across bathroom tiles.
But there’s another possibility that might surprise you.
The “bug” may not be alive at all.
A tiny piece of lint, dried leaf, or other lightweight debris can slide across smooth tile when disturbed by air from a ventilation fan, an opening door, or a sudden change in air pressure. In dim lighting, that movement can easily look like a tiny insect.
If you find one, stay calm. Avoid touching it directly, and use a glass and piece of cardboard to move it outside—or carefully remove it with a vacuum.
One unexpected visitor usually means nothing.
But if you start seeing several, it may be time to investigate further.
