After a difficult election night for Republicans, Donald Trump finally addressed the results, and his first response made one thing clear: he was not prepared to accept personal responsibility for the setback.
In a post on Truth Social, the president claimed that Republicans would have won by a landslide if his name had appeared on the ballot. “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” he wrote.
Trump later acknowledged that Democrats had fought hard and said he was willing to work with them on certain issues. However, he also warned that he would use his presidential veto power against legislation he opposed.
He pointed to several factors behind the Republican losses, including the candidates themselves and rising gasoline prices linked to the war with Iran. He also suggested that the party had struggled to transfer the enthusiasm at his campaign rallies to individual candidates.
The results are expected to give Democrats control of both chambers of Congress, setting up a difficult final two years of Trump’s presidency. The political battle in Washington is far from over.
