For someone whose fortune is estimated in the billions, protecting wealth can be just as important as earning it. And Michael Jordan appears to have learned that lesson after experiencing one of the most expensive celebrity divorces in history.
Jordan and his wife, Yvette Prieto, married in April 2013. According to reports about their prenuptial agreement, Prieto was entitled to $1 million for every year they remained married during their first decade together. After reaching their tenth anniversary, that amount reportedly increased to $5 million for each additional year of marriage.
The agreement is also said to protect Jordan’s business interests and major assets in the event of a separation.
His caution reportedly stems from his 2006 divorce from Juanita Vanoy, after 17 years of marriage. Without a prenup, she received a settlement reported at $168 million.
Today, Jordan’s fortune is estimated at approximately $3.5 billion to $3.8 billion, largely thanks to his Nike partnership and business investments.
Although the reported annual payment is enormous, it represents only a small portion of his overall wealth. The arrangement highlights how financial planning can play a major role in even the most high-profile marriages.
