How Tissue Expansion Works

Tissue expansion is a surgical technique that allows the body to gradually produce additional skin to repair or reconstruct damaged areas.

The process usually begins with a one- to two-hour operation. A surgeon places a silicone balloon-like expander beneath the skin in a specially created pocket. The device contains a valve that allows it to be gradually filled with saline or, in some cases, carbon dioxide.

Gradual Expansion

After the incision heals, the patient returns for regular appointments. During these visits, the expander is slowly filled, stretching the surrounding skin. Some people experience mild discomfort as the skin becomes tighter.

Once enough new tissue has developed, a second operation is performed. The expander is removed, and the newly stretched skin is repositioned to cover the affected area.

Tissue expansion can be especially useful for scalp reconstruction because the expanded skin can retain normal hair growth. It is also used in breast reconstruction, as well as repairs involving the face, neck, arms, hands, and legs.

Depending on the size and complexity of the area being treated, several expansion stages may sometimes be necessary.
