The final moments of a private jet that crashed in Florida, killing all nine people aboard, have raised troubling questions about what went wrong. Now, an aviation expert has offered a possible explanation for the terrifying descent.
The Learjet 60 crashed in a residential area of Palm Beach County on November 1, after departing Austin, Texas, for the Bahamas. Shortly before the disaster, the pilot reported ice accumulating on the aircraft and severe turbulence that was throwing the jet up and down by hundreds of feet.
DeWitt Ingram, an experienced Learjet captain, examined flight-tracking data and noted that the aircraft appeared to fall from approximately 35,000 feet to the ground in around 60 seconds.
He suggested that powerful air currents near thunderstorms may have damaged the aircraft or caused the pilots to lose control.
However, this remains only a possible explanation. Investigators from the NTSB and FAA are still working to establish what caused the deadly crash.
