From the outside, Hayden Panettiere seemed to have everything. But behind the cameras, she was fighting a battle that would eventually force her to make one of the most painful decisions of her life.
After the birth of her daughter Kaya, Panettiere struggled with severe postpartum depression, anxiety and addiction. In 2018, while she was trying to recover, Kaya went to live with her father, Wladimir Klitschko, who was granted full custody.
For years, the decision was misunderstood. Panettiere later explained that it was not as simple as willingly walking away from her child. She had been struggling deeply and believed Kaya needed stability while she worked on getting better.
In her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she revisited that painful chapter and explained that, once she recovered, she ultimately felt it would be unfair to uproot Kaya from the life she had built with her father.
The separation remained heartbreaking, but Panettiere continued to maintain a close relationship with her daughter through visits and frequent calls.
She never stopped being Kaya’s mother. She simply made a choice she believed would give her daughter the stability she needed — even when it broke her own heart.
