The Sewol Ferry Disaster: 304 Lives Lost in One of the Most Severe Maritime Tragedies in History

What began as an ordinary school trip turned into a nightmare that would leave hundreds of families waiting for children who would never return home.

A passenger ferry carrying 476 people set off on an overnight journey. Among those aboard were hundreds of students excited about spending time with their classmates. But the following morning, the vessel suddenly began tilting heavily before eventually sinking.

As the situation worsened, many passengers remained inside after being instructed to stay where they were. Rescue teams arrived, but serious failures in communication, evacuation decisions, and emergency coordination meant that hundreds could not be saved.

Investigators later identified major problems involving the ship’s stability, excessive cargo, insufficient ballast, and improperly secured loads. The captain and crew also faced intense scrutiny over their actions during the emergency.

In total, 304 people lost their lives, most of them teenagers on a school trip.

The ferry had been traveling from Incheon toward Jeju Island, off the southern coast of South Korea. The disaster occurred on April 16, 2014, becoming one of the darkest maritime tragedies in the country’s history.
