It looked like something from a nightmare had appeared on the porch overnight.
Holding a cup of coffee, I froze when I saw the strange, fleshy mass near my front door. My heart started pounding. It looked raw, twisted and disturbingly organic—and for several seconds, I couldn’t even convince myself to move.
Was it alive? Had something been watching the house?
I stayed back and took out my phone, zooming in on the object instead of getting close. I checked the trees, roof and railings, trying to figure out where it had come from. Nothing made sense. It didn’t resemble fallen fruit, fungus or anything else I recognized.
For hours, I had no explanation.
I sent photographs to friends and posted them in local groups, hoping someone would recognize it. Eventually, a neighbor who hunts offered an answer that was disturbing, but far less mysterious.
It wasn’t a monster or some bizarre creature.
It was a piece of deer hide and meat, apparently dropped near the house by a coyote during the night.
The discovery brought an unexpected realization. While I had been sleeping peacefully inside, a completely different world of survival and predators had been unfolding just beyond my front door.
