Rumeysa Gelgi holds the incredible title of being the tallest woman in the world.
Standing out for her towering height, she represents a unique and inspiring figure. Living in Turkey, Rumeysa’s life is shaped by her rare genetic condition called Weaver syndrome, which has affected only about 50 people globally. Her journey has been filled with challenges, but she has faced them with courage and determination.
From a young age, Rumeysa stood out. By the age of six, she was already 5’8”, a height that made her feel different from other children. Growing up, she faced societal expectations and struggled with the idea that women should not be taller than men.
This added emotional challenges to her life. Despite these difficulties, Rumeysa had the support of her loving parents and encouraging teachers who helped her find strength in her uniqueness.
Her medical history has been complicated. At just one year old, Rumeysa underwent open-heart surgery, followed by another procedure for an umbilical hernia at age three.
By the time she was five, she needed months of physiotherapy before she could take her first steps with the help of a walker. Later in life, she faced scoliosis, undergoing two surgeries in 2013. Though she now relies on a wheelchair, walker, or custom orthopedic shoes, Rumeysa stays strong through regular physiotherapy.
Adapting to her height has required creativity. From custom furniture to specially tailored clothes, Rumeysa has learned to turn challenges into opportunities.
Shopping, for instance, involves modifying plus-size clothing to create her own style. This inventive approach allows her to embrace her individuality and enjoy fashion in her own way.
Rumeysa’s life is not just about overcoming challenges. She enjoys hobbies like swimming and spending time with her family, who take great pride in her accomplishments. A Netflix enthusiast, she often watches shows with her mother, finding joy in simple moments.
Professionally, Rumeysa has achieved significant milestones. She is a certified front-end developer and researcher, working at edX and advocating for awareness about Weaver syndrome.
She has also volunteered for animal welfare organizations and built a strong following on Instagram, where she shares her story to inspire others.
Recently, Rumeysa moved to California to advance her career in tech. She dreams of reuniting with her cat, Peri, and traveling to the UK.
Through her public speaking and online presence, Rumeysa encourages others to see challenges as opportunities for growth, reminding everyone that being different is a gift to embrace.
