When they announced their decision to step down from royal duties, their spokesperson emphasized that they were still committed to serving the UK and supporting the organizations they had represented. However, Queen Elizabeth made it clear that stepping away from royal work meant they could no longer fulfill the responsibilities of public service, although they would remain loved family members.
Despite criticism from UK media and international magazines, Harry and Meghan felt that leaving the royal family was the best decision for their well-being. In a notable interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry mentioned his desire to avoid history repeating itself, a reference to his late mother, Princess Diana.
Meghan shared that they had initially asked to move to another Commonwealth country, such as South Africa or Canada, to ease the media pressure. However, their request was denied, which led them to move to the United States instead.
Their plan was not to leave the UK permanently. Initially, they intended to take a year off from royal duties. Meghan needed a break from the relentless British tabloids, and Harry wanted to pursue his passion for Africa.
They hoped to continue representing the Queen as non-senior royals while living in another Commonwealth country, which is why they stayed in Canada before moving to the US. However, logistical issues, such as money and security, prevented this plan from materializing.
The tension between Harry and Meghan and the rest of the royal family worsened after Harry’s memoir “Spare” was published, revealing intimate details about the royals. This further strained relationships, culminating in King Charles evicting Harry and Meghan from their UK home, Frogmore Cottage.
Feeling increasingly isolated from his old life, Harry now misses his friends from the army and his school days, many of whom have not visited him in California due to strained relations with Meghan.
As a result, he is looking to buy a permanent home in the UK. This longing for his past life suggests that while he has embraced his new life in the US, parts of his old life still hold significant emotional value for him.
