It started with an ordinary stop at a gas station after work.
As I finished filling my tank, a woman approached and politely asked if I could help her buy enough gas to get home. She said she had left her wallet behind.
I wasn’t sure what to believe. Gas-station scams do happen, and she seemed to be approaching other drivers too.
When I declined to give her cash, she suggested I simply pay at the pump.
Instead of arguing, I went inside and told the clerk what I had seen.
His response immediately caught my attention.
“You’re not the first person to tell us.”
Several customers had reportedly described similar encounters during the previous week. Sometimes the woman asked for gas. Other times, she claimed she needed money for food or transportation.
The clerk contacted the non-emergency police line, and an officer soon arrived.
The officer spoke with the woman calmly and discovered that the situation was more complicated than it first appeared. She wasn’t wanted for a crime, but the station had received repeated complaints, and management did not want customers being approached after being asked to stop.
The officer gave her a formal warning and explained that she could no longer solicit customers on the property. She gathered her belongings and left peacefully.
Driving home, I realized the situation hadn’t required confrontation.
The woman may have genuinely been struggling, while the business had legitimate concerns.
Sometimes the safest solution isn’t deciding who’s right.
It’s stepping back and allowing the appropriate people to handle it.
