Prince Harry and Meghan Markle celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary on May 19. Their wedding on May 19, 2018, was a grand event attended by many celebrities like George Clooney, David and Victoria Beckham, Serena Williams, James Corden, and Oprah Winfrey.
Meghan wore a beautiful dress by Givenchy’s creative director Clare Waight Keller and a tiara that once belonged to Queen Mary. The wedding was broadcast to over 29 million viewers.
Harry and Meghan’s wedding was seen as a perfect counterpart to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding. However, there were differences.
Kate arrived with her father, while Meghan arrived with her mother due to a complicated relationship with her own father. Meghan’s wave to the crowd was casual, unlike Kate’s more formal wave.
Royal experts commented on the guest list of Harry and Meghan’s wedding, noting the presence of many Hollywood celebrities. Andrew Morton, author of “Diana: Her True Story,” mentioned that Meghan invited many celebrities she hadn’t even met before, forming her own circle of influential friends. This was different from Harry’s friends, who typically stayed out of the spotlight.
Problems within the royal family surfaced soon after the wedding. Reports emerged about Meghan’s behavior towards staff and tensions between Meghan, Harry, and other royal members, including William and Kate.
Meghan and Harry even asked to move to another Commonwealth country like South Africa or Canada, but their request was denied, further straining their relationship with the royal family.
Now, six years later, Harry and Meghan have built a new life in the United States with their two children. Royal expert Ingrid Seward, speaking to The Sun, mentioned that while their wedding brought them public affection, it didn’t last.
Harry and Meghan faced criticism and felt they had let down the Queen and other royals. Seward noted that while Harry’s financial success is evident, he struggles with his personal feelings about leaving his family behind.
Historian Gareth Russell suggested that Harry and Meghan might be forming an “alternative royal family.” This idea raises concerns because it subjects them to more scrutiny, especially regarding their commercial ventures and public appearances.
Russell mentioned that they could be seen as royals in exile, and their popularity, which has dipped in the U.S., could change with time.
The big question remains whether Harry and Meghan can mend their relationship with the rest of the royal family. While they seem happy in their new life, only time will tell if reconciliation is possible.
