The sinking of the Titanic in 1912 is one of the most tragic and well-known events in history.
However, one mystery that has puzzled people for years is why there are no human skeletons at the Titanic’s wreck site.
When the ship sank after hitting an iceberg, about 1,517 people lost their lives, but when explorers visit the site, they do not find any skeletons. This has led to a lot of questions and speculation about what happened to the bodies of those who died.
One key reason for the absence of skeletons has to do with the depth at which the Titanic lies. The wreck is located about 3,800 meters below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.
The environment at this depth is very different from the conditions closer to the surface. According to deep-sea expert Robert Ballard, the water at this depth is under-saturated in calcium carbonate, which is a substance that bones are made of.
The lack of calcium in the water can cause bones to dissolve over time. This means that the bones of the people who died on the Titanic have likely been absorbed by the ocean water, leaving behind no trace.
Even though no skeletons have been found, explorers have discovered other items that hint at the presence of human remains in the past. For example, pairs of shoes and clothing have been found at the wreck site.
These items suggest that people were once there, but their bones have since disappeared. Many people have expressed surprise and disbelief when learning about this through discussions on platforms like Reddit.
The mystery of the missing bodies has also sparked legal and ethical debates. Some people believe that the Titanic wreck should be left alone as a memorial to those who died, while others argue that it is important to continue exploring the site to learn more about the disaster.
