Libby Huffer, a 45-year-old mother, has lived with a challenging condition known as neurofibromatosis type 1. This genetic disorder causes non-cancerous tumors to grow wherever nerves are present in the body. Libby inherited this condition from her mother, and it has resulted in over 6,000 tumors covering her body.
Throughout her life, Libby faced severe bullying and name-calling because of her appearance. Cruel people called her names like “toad” and “lizard breath.” Her condition worsened significantly when she became pregnant and gave birth 23 years ago, causing the number of tumors to multiply.
These tumors cover every part of her body, including her face, and not only affect her appearance but also cause chronic pain. Simple activities, such as hugging or showering, can be painful for her. Overwhelmed by her condition and the emotional toll of constant bullying, Libby decided to take action.
In 2016, Libby started a fundraiser to raise money for a special surgery called electrodessication. This pioneering procedure helps remove the tumors and prevent them from growing back. Through the generosity of others, she managed to raise enough funds for the surgery.
In June the following year, Libby underwent the much-anticipated surgery. During this procedure, about 1,000 tumors were removed from her face and other parts of her body. The surgery was successful, but it left her with many scars. To treat these scars, she underwent CO2 laser treatment.
Libby expressed that although the surgery had improved her physical appearance, the emotional healing would take longer. She believed that with more surgeries, her confidence would continue to grow, helping to heal the painful memories from her childhood.
The transformation after her surgery was dramatic. Libby noticed that she had fewer large tumors on her face, and she felt more confident. She observed that people stared at her less, though occasionally children would still look at her. Overall, there was a significant positive change.
Libby shared the pain and bullying she endured throughout her life. She recounted how children in school would pick on her and call her hurtful names. When she initially sought funds for her surgery, she opened up about her struggles and asked for help to feel normal again. She described the chronic pain caused by the tumors and the difficulty of dealing with the constant tingling sensation in her feet.
Despite the challenges, Libby emphasized that she is a human being who deserves to be loved and cared for like anyone else. She wished people would talk to her instead of staring and making her feel uncomfortable.
The surgery, which cost $23,500, was life-changing for Libby. For the first time in three decades, she experienced life without constant stares and taunts from others. Her story is a testament to resilience and the impact of kindness and medical advancements on improving someone’s quality of life.
