There’s a huge building in China called the “Dystopian Apartment,” featured in a viral TikTok video. It can house up to 30,000 people and has everything they need inside.
The Regent International apartment, located in Qianjiang Century City, Hangzhou, was designed by Alicia Loo and built in 2013. It’s a massive 675-foot-tall building with an S-shaped design and 36 or 39 floors, depending on the side.
Inside, there are over 30 floors filled with amenities like restaurants, pools, grocery stores, and even internet cafes.
While some worry about it being “dystopian,” others praise its innovative design and sustainability. Living there is convenient and affordable, with units ranging from $200 to $600 per month.
However, living in such a densely populated space means residents might have limited personal space and opportunities to be outdoors.
Despite the concerns, this type of housing could offer a solution to the housing crisis in places like the U.S.
Interestingly, a similar concept is already in use in Whittier, Alaska, where all 272 residents live in a 14-story building with various amenities.
While the “Dystopian Apartment” may have its downsides, it also presents a unique housing solution for densely populated areas.
