Security is paramount, and many people take measures to protect their homes, such as installing surveillance cameras, to ensure their privacy and safety. However, criminals continuously devise new tactics to infiltrate homes.
Kim Fleming Cernigliaro, a resident of Texas, recently shared a harrowing story to raise awareness about a new method thieves are using to gain unauthorized entry into homes. When she was at home alone, someone knocked on her door. However, what started as a simple knock quickly escalated into an aggressive pounding. Kim’s intuition told her not to open the door since she wasn’t expecting anyone.
As the relentless pounding persisted and her unease grew, she wisely decided to wait, choosing not to confront the person outside. Eventually, it appeared that the individual had given up and left. Kim cautiously descended the stairs and opened her front door, only to discover a rubber band wrapped around the door handle. She immediately called the police to report the suspicious incident, but she remained uncertain about the significance of the rubber band.
Upon the police’s arrival, they revealed that others in the area had encountered similar rubber bands on their doorknobs. They explained the sinister purpose behind this peculiar technique: when a homeowner answers the door and releases the latch to open it, the rubber band remains in place, effectively keeping the latch open. This allows burglars to gain easy access to the house, as the homeowner cannot close and lock the door due to the rubber band’s obstruction.
Kim’s story serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us of the importance of staying vigilant and cautious. Even when we are within the safety of our homes, we must be aware of the evolving methods that criminals employ to compromise our security.
