Debra Byrd, a renowned singer and voice teacher, has passed away at the age of 72.
She died at her home in Los Angeles on a Tuesday, though the exact cause of her death has not yet been confirmed. Debra was widely recognized for her roles on popular shows like “The Voice” and “American Idol,” where she inspired countless artists with her talent and guidance.
Many well-known figures in the entertainment industry have expressed their sadness and shared heartfelt tributes in honor of Debra’s life. Barry Manilow, a longtime friend and collaborator, shared his sorrow with his followers, saying, “I’ve never been so sad in my life today.”
He described Debra as one of his best friends and expressed his deep love and how much he would miss her. Their bond was strong, both personally and professionally, as they had worked together for many years.
Other big names who worked with Debra also paid their respects. Jennifer Hudson, who gained fame on “American Idol” with Debra’s support, shared her grief on social media.
She described Debra as a beacon of hope and guidance for the contestants. Jennifer highlighted how much Debra taught her and others, and while she will be missed, her influence will continue to live on through the artists she mentored. She ended her tribute by saying, “Rest in peace, Debra.”

Debra’s journey began in Cleveland, Ohio, where she was born and later attended Kent State University. During her time at university, she honed her craft by performing in theaters such as Karamu and Dobama.
After her studies, she joined Barry Manilow’s band as a backup singer and even scored a hit with “Street Singin’” in 1976, a top 30 single on the Billboard Hot 100.
Debra worked on “American Idol” for ten seasons before moving on to “The Voice,” where she continued to guide and support contestants. Her career was long and illustrious, and she was highly regarded for her vocal expertise. In 2018, she was part of the choir that performed the Oscar-nominated song “Mighty River” at the Academy Awards.
Throughout her career, Debra also worked with music legends like Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, and Tom Petty. She contributed to many projects, including movies like “Sister Act II” and “The Lion King.” Additionally, in 2019, she was hired to oversee the vocal production for the Super Bowl tribute to Prince.
Debra’s passion for music also extended to education. She became the chair of the vocal department at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, where she shared her knowledge and nurtured the next generation of vocal talent.
