But Kubrick believed more weight was necessary to fully embody the character. D’Onofrio’s weight surged from 200 to 280 pounds, and the process was far from easy.
In the film’s boot-camp scenes, D’Onofrio’s newfound weight became a grueling obstacle, making physically demanding tasks even more challenging. Despite the difficulties, his portrayal of Leonard, who was chubby, mentally disturbed, and not particularly bright, garnered critical acclaim.
However, the consequences of his transformation extended beyond the film. People began treating him differently due to his altered appearance, often mistaking him for the character he portrayed. D’Onofrio reflected on this change, saying, “It changed my life. Women didn’t look at me, most of the time I was looking at their backs as they were running away. People used to say things to me twice because they thought I was stupid.”
Despite the challenges, D’Onofrio credits Stanley Kubrick for making his career. The role in “Full Metal Jacket” opened doors for him, leading to over 50 films and numerous television roles. He became a series regular on “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” and played memorable parts in films like “Dying Young,” “The Break-Up,” and “Jurassic World.”
D’Onofrio’s journey to success began with humble beginnings in Brooklyn, working various jobs to support his acting aspirations. Over the years, he’s become a respected figure in the entertainment industry, known not only for his talent but also for his dedication to his craft.
