Born on December 5, 1967, in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, Amanda grew up as Armand Lepore. From an early age, she felt different and struggled with her gender identity.
She experienced gender dysphoria, a deep feeling that her body did not match the femininity she felt inside. In her teenage years, she learned the term “transgender” and realized she wasn’t alone in her feelings.
At the age of 15, Amanda began her transition after meeting a transgender woman who helped her understand her identity. With her parents’ support, she started hormone therapy and underwent gender-affirming surgery by the age of 17.
This was a brave and rare decision in the 1980s when there was little representation or support for transgender people. Despite criticism and challenges, Amanda embraced her true self with confidence.
She moved to New York City, where she found a place in the vibrant nightlife and club scene. Amanda became a regular at famous clubs like Limelight and formed friendships with key figures like Michael Alig. Inspired by Old Hollywood stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield, Amanda created a glamorous, iconic image that made her stand out.
Amanda gained widespread recognition as the muse of renowned photographer David LaChapelle. She appeared in his art pieces, music videos, and advertisements, becoming a pop culture icon. Her confidence, striking looks, and unapologetic identity helped her rise to fame as a burlesque dancer, model, and performer.
In addition to modeling, Amanda pursued music, releasing albums like I… Amanda Lepore and hit singles like “Champagne” and “My Hair Looks Fierce.”
