Breast Cancer Awareness: Four Early Warning Signs Every Woman Should Recognize

4 Breast Changes Women Over 60 Should Never Ignore

As women get older, paying attention to changes in their bodies becomes increasingly important. Breast changes are often harmless, but some deserve professional evaluation.

Here are four signs women should know.

1. Changes in breast shape or appearance
Sudden swelling, a noticeable change in contour, dimpling, puckering, or one breast becoming noticeably different from the other should be discussed with a doctor, particularly if the change persists.

2. Skin or nipple changes
Redness, thickening, an orange-peel-like texture, new nipple inversion, irritation, or unexplained discharge can have many causes, but persistent or unusual changes should be checked.

3. A lump or swelling in the armpit
Swollen lymph nodes can occur with infections, but a lump that doesn’t disappear should be evaluated. Because breast tissue extends toward the armpit, changes in this area can sometimes be relevant to breast health.

4. A new breast lump
Most breast lumps are not cancerous, but any new or unusual lump should be examined by a healthcare professional.

Regular screening and knowing what is normal for your body can help you notice changes sooner. Awareness isn’t about fear—it’s about giving yourself the opportunity to seek answers early.
