For 13 years, Sunny was more than a famous White House dog. She was part of the Obama family’s everyday life, from playful moments on the South Lawn to quiet memories at home.
On September 16, 2026, Barack and Michelle Obama announced that Sunny, their beloved Portuguese Water Dog, had died. Barack described her as a “cherished member of our family” and remembered the moment she joined them during his second presidential term in 2013. Even Bo, the family’s first dog, quickly fell in love with her.
Sunny was known for her boundless energy. She chased birds and squirrels, leaped over hedges, and constantly wanted someone to play with her. She adored Malia and Sasha and became a familiar presence around the White House.
