An elderly couple walked into a fast food restaurant one day. They ordered one hamburger, one order of fries, and one drink.
The old man carefully unwrapped the plain hamburger and cut it in half. He placed one half in front of his wife. Then, he counted the fries and divided them into two equal piles, putting one pile in front of her. He took a sip of the drink and passed it to his wife, who also took a sip before setting it down between them.
As the old man started to eat his half of the hamburger, people around them began to notice. They whispered among themselves, feeling sorry for the couple. They thought the elderly pair could only afford one meal to share between them.
The man continued to eat his fries when a young man approached their table. He kindly offered to buy another meal for them. The old man smiled and said they were fine. He explained that they were used to sharing everything. Meanwhile, the old woman hadn’t taken a bite. She just sat there, watching her husband eat and occasionally sipping from the shared drink.
Seeing this, the young man came over again. He was even more insistent this time, asking them to let him buy another meal. The old woman kindly refused, saying, “No, thank you. We are used to sharing everything.”
As the old man finished eating and neatly wiped his face with a napkin, the young man approached once more. He was puzzled because the old woman still hadn’t eaten a single bite. He asked her, “May I ask what you are waiting for?”
The old woman looked at him and replied with a smile, “The teeth.”
