Actress Quinta Brunson Is Upset With ‘No Black Characters’ On Friends

Discussions about diversity in entertainment are becoming more common, as people reflect on the representation (or lack thereof) in some of their favorite TV shows.

One such show that has recently come under scrutiny is the iconic 90s sitcom Friends. While beloved by millions, many have pointed out its lack of diversity, including actress Quinta Brunson.

Quinta Brunson, known for her Emmy-winning performance in Abbott Elementary, recently shared her thoughts on this during her monologue on Saturday Night Live.

Brunson humorously addressed how Friends failed to include black characters as part of its central group of friends. Her remarks sparked laughter but also highlighted a serious issue about representation in media.

Brunson used the opportunity to draw a comparison between Friends and her own show. Abbott Elementary is a comedy series set in a predominantly black, state-funded school in Philadelphia.

Unlike Friends, Abbott Elementary reflects a diverse cast and setting, making it relatable to a broader audience. Brunson joked that creating her own show and winning Emmys was “so much easier” than auditioning for SNL, adding that her sitcom was like Friends but with black characters and set in Philadelphia instead of New York.

Although Brunson used humor to address the issue, it’s clear that the lack of diversity on Friends is a serious concern. Even Martha Kauffman, one of the creators of the show, has admitted regret over the absence of black characters.

In recent years, Kauffman has publicly acknowledged her mistakes, expressing embarrassment about her lack of awareness during the show’s run. To support change, she pledged $4 million to a university to fund African and African-American studies programs.

Kauffman has spoken openly about her journey toward understanding systemic racism, admitting it has been a painful but necessary process. She stated that accepting guilt and taking steps to become an ally were important parts of her growth.
