Tamayo Perry, a 49-year-old surfer, lifeguard, and actor, tragically lost his life on Sunday, June 23, in a shark attack near Goat Island on Oahu’s North Shore, Hawaii.
Perry, who had appeared in movies like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Blue Crush, was a respected waterman and a beloved member of the local community.
The attack happened just before 1 p.m. A call to emergency services reported that the surfer had been bitten multiple times by a shark. Lifeguards quickly brought his body to shore using a Jet Ski, but paramedics confirmed he had already passed away.
Perry was an experienced lifeguard who had worked with Honolulu Ocean Safety for eight years. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi expressed deep sadness over the loss, praising Perry’s bravery and dedication to protecting both residents and visitors.
In his statement, Blangiardi said, “His heroic actions and tireless efforts to ensure safety will never be forgotten.”
Perry was also known for his skill at Pipeline, one of the world’s most famous surfing spots, and was celebrated for his contributions to the surfing world. He grew up on Oahu’s east side and was close friends with singer Jack Johnson.
In addition to his work as a lifeguard, Perry and his wife ran a surf school on Oahu’s North Shore, where they shared their passion for the ocean.
Emilia Perry, Tamayo’s wife, spoke of his love for surfing and the sea. “Tragic though his passing may be, he left this world doing what he loved, where he loved to do it,” she said.
Condolences from the surfing community poured in after the news of Perry’s death. Surfing legend Kelly Slater expressed his disbelief, writing, “You truly lived the life you loved.”
