4-Year-Old Boy Passes Away After Telling Mom ‘Under My Arm Hurts’

Sammy Knowles, a mother from Sheffield, shared the heartbreaking story of her four-year-old son, Jaxon, who passed away suddenly due to meningitis.

His death came as a complete shock to his parents, as there were no clear signs of the illness beforehand.

Jaxon was their miracle baby. Sammy and her husband, Jordan, had struggled for seven years to have him. They had gone through multiple rounds of IVF and suffered three miscarriages before finally welcoming Jaxon into the world. He was their last hope, and they cherished every moment with him.

Recently, the family went on what they thought would be a dream vacation. However, as soon as they returned home, Jaxon complained about pain under his arm. At first, his parents didn’t think much of it. Later that night, he said his tummy hurt and asked to sleep in his mother’s bed, something he often did when he wasn’t feeling well.

To help reduce his fever, Sammy gave him paracetamol, just as she had done before when he had chest infections. She thought he would feel better by morning. But when she woke up at 5 a.m. to check on him, she noticed a rash on his body. At first, she thought it might be chickenpox. But within minutes, the rash spread rapidly, and she realized something was terribly wrong.

Jaxon’s condition worsened quickly. His mouth and tongue began to swell, and he vomited. His parents immediately called 999, but while waiting for the ambulance, Jaxon was struggling to breathe. They had to turn him on his side to help him.

By the time they reached the hospital, his condition was already critical. Doctors informed the parents that they needed to put him into a coma and transfer him to a children’s hospital for further treatment. But despite their best efforts, his small heart couldn’t hold on. Jaxon passed away on the morning of February 17.

Doctors later confirmed that Jaxon had meningitis. Sammy and Jordan were in shock. He had been fine just hours before—there had been no clear symptoms that could have warned them. It all happened so fast.

Now, Jaxon’s parents are determined to raise awareness about meningitis to help prevent other families from experiencing the same tragedy. His father, Jordan, explained that in Jaxon’s case, there was no available vaccine that could have protected him. He hopes that with more funding and research, new treatments and vaccines could be developed in the future.

Meningitis can be difficult to detect because its early symptoms, like headaches, neck pain, and fever, are common in other illnesses. As the condition progresses, it can lead to confusion, extreme tiredness, or seizures. Jaxon’s parents want to make sure other families recognize the warning signs before it’s too late.

To honor their son’s memory, they created a charity page to support Meningitis Now, a foundation dedicated to fighting the disease. Jaxon’s favorite football club, Sheffield Wednesday, will also pay tribute to him during their match against Sunderland.

For Sammy and Jordan, life will never be the same. “He was everything to us,” Sammy said through tears. “Now, our house is empty. Our world is empty. We have nothing.”
