In heartbreaking news, Freddy Chase, a well-known skydiving athlete and daredevil content creator, has announced the tragic death of his wife, 28-year-old Devrey Jane LaRiccia-Chase. The beloved skydiving instructor from California lost her life in a terrible accident, and Freddy has shared his grief and the details of the tragic event with the world.
Devrey was not just a skilled skydiver but also a teacher who loved what she did. On the day of the accident, she went to work at Skydive Perris, as usual, with her bright smile. It was a beautiful day, and she was scheduled to do a tandem jump with a student, something she had done hundreds of times before. Everything seemed normal during the jump—there were no issues with the plane or the parachute (canopy). She was doing what she did best, preparing to land safely on the grass.
However, as she was making her final descent, something unexpected happened. Devrey encountered “dust devils,” small but powerful whirlwinds that can be very dangerous in skydiving. At about 40 feet from the ground, she successfully avoided one dust devil but was caught by another. These whirlwinds can be especially treacherous because when they move over grass, they become nearly invisible, making them hard to detect.
This second dust devil caused her canopy to spin out of control, leading to a catastrophic crash. Despite the terrible incident, Devrey was still alive when she hit the ground, though she was unconscious. Tragically, she passed away from her injuries later at the hospital.
Freddy shared his sorrow on Instagram, expressing his deep love for Devrey and the unbearable pain of losing her. In his post, he called her his “soul, love, other half, baby, ride or die, and everything.” He described her as too perfect for this world, believing that she was called back to heaven because she was an angel among us. Freddy’s words painted a picture of the profound connection they shared and the immense grief he is now experiencing.
Following the news of her passing, tributes poured in from people who knew and admired Devrey. Many expressed their sorrow and sent messages of love and support to Freddy. Devrey was also known for her love of raves, frequently sharing photos and videos from these events, showcasing her vibrant personality. Her death has left a huge void in the lives of those who knew her, but her memory lives on in the hearts of many.
