At 34 years old, Courtney Ann Sanford was known as a skilled driver. People trusted her on the road. But one ordinary day turned tragic when she made a fatal mistake.
Driving along, Courtney heard her favorite song, “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, playing on the radio. Feeling joyful, she decided to capture the moment with a selfie. She quickly posted it on Facebook with the caption, “This song makes me happy!”
In that brief moment, her attention was not on the road. Her car veered into the path of a truck, crashing at about 60 km/h. The impact sent her vehicle careening into a ditch and then into a tree. The crash was so severe that her car caught fire.
Emergency services were called immediately, but it was too late. Courtney lost her life in the crash.
When her family pieced together what happened, they discovered her last Facebook post. It was posted at 8:33 AM, just seconds before the emergency call came in at 8:34 AM.
In a split second, her decision to take a selfie cost her life. It’s a heartbreaking reminder that when you’re behind the wheel, your focus must be on driving safely. Distractions, even seemingly harmless ones, can have devastating consequences.
