Libby Huffer, a courageous 45-year-old woman, lives with a genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis type 1. This condition causes non-cancerous tumors to form on her nerves, leading to the growth of over 6,000 tumors all over her body, including her face.
These tumors not only impact her appearance but also cause chronic pain. Sadly, Libby has also faced years of cruel bullying, with people calling her names like “toad” and “lizard breath” because of her looks.
Libby’s condition worsened dramatically when she became pregnant and gave birth to her daughter 23 years ago. The number of tumors on her body increased significantly, making her situation seem hopeless. Despite these challenges, Libby refused to let her condition control her life.
In 2016, she took a brave step and started a fundraiser to pay for a special surgery called electrodessication. This surgery could remove her tumors and prevent new ones from growing. Thanks to the generosity of many people, she raised the necessary funds.
In June 2017, Libby underwent the surgery, which was a great success. About 1,000 tumors were removed from her face and other parts of her body. Though the surgery left her with scars, Libby remained hopeful and began CO2 laser treatments to reduce the scars and continue healing.
The physical changes were significant, but Libby also needed to heal emotionally. Years of bullying had taken a toll on her self-esteem. However, each surgery helped her regain confidence and start to let go of painful memories from her past.
With fewer large tumors on her face, she felt less like a target for stares and comments, although she still noticed occasional glances from children. Her transformation was clear, and her newfound confidence was evident.
Throughout her journey, Libby has shown incredible strength. Despite the constant pain and bullying she has endured, she has remained determined to find acceptance and understanding. Simple actions like getting a hug or taking a shower are painful due to her condition, yet she perseveres.
Libby longs for genuine connections with people who see her for who she is, not just her appearance. She hopes that people will talk to her instead of just staring. The surgery that helped change her life cost $23,500, but it was worth it. After three decades, Libby finally feels free from the judgment of others and is on a path to living a more fulfilling life.
