Remember the iconic “Sun Baby” from the children’s show Teletubbies? Well, it turns out that the baby who played the Sun Baby is now in her mid-20s and is expecting her first child with her boyfriend, Ricky Latham.
Her name is Jessica Smith, and she was just nine months old when she was cast as the Sun Baby in Teletubbies. On October 10th, she took to her Instagram account to share the news of her pregnancy, posting ultrasound images and captioning the photo with “When two becomes three.”
This revelation may make you feel a bit old, as the baby we all remember from the show is about to become a mother herself. Jessica’s journey from being the Sun Baby to expecting her own child is quite a remarkable transition.
Nearly a decade ago, the identity of the Sun Baby was a mystery to the public. It wasn’t until 2014 that some individuals started claiming to be the Sun Baby, leading to controversy as there could only be one true Sun Baby. In response to these imposters, Jessica decided to put the matter to rest.
She posted a message on Facebook after celebrating her 19th birthday, coming clean about her role as the Sun Baby. She had initially hidden her identity but received encouragement from her friends to reveal the truth. In her Facebook post, she said, “I am the sun from Teletubbies,” putting an end to any doubts about her authenticity.
Jessica’s journey to becoming the Sun Baby began when she was just nine months old. Her mother took her for a routine checkup at the local hospital, where a midwife had been contacted by a local production company searching for a smiley baby. Jessica was submitted along with other babies, and she went through the audition process, ultimately being chosen as the Sun Baby.
During the show’s filming, her father used creative tactics to make her laugh and look at the camera, such as holding a teddy bear behind the camera and rolling a toy racing car in front of her. Although she has no memories of her time on set, her parents certainly do.
In 2019, Jessica gained attention when a viral photo showed her with a baby on her lap. Some people incorrectly assumed that the child was hers, sparking rumors that the Teletubbies Sun Baby was having her own child. However, that baby was not hers.
