At first, it seemed like a simple desire to look better. But for one South Korean model, the search for beauty gradually became something far more dangerous.
Hang Mioku was once a successful model and singer whose appearance helped open doors to a promising career. As her popularity grew, so did her interest in cosmetic procedures. One operation led to another, until eventually her desire to change her appearance became difficult to control.
Doctors eventually refused to perform additional procedures because they believed she had already gone too far. But Hang continued on her own. She began injecting substances into her face at home, initially using silicone. When she could no longer obtain it, she made an unthinkable decision and began using cooking oil.
The consequences were devastating. Her face became severely swollen and permanently disfigured, leaving her almost unrecognizable compared with the young model she had once been.
After her story became known in South Korea, people donated money to help her receive reconstructive treatment. Doctors performed multiple surgeries to remove foreign material and damaged tissue. The procedures improved her appearance, but could not completely undo the damage.
Hang Mioku’s story became a widely remembered example of how the pursuit of physical perfection can become dangerous when body-image struggles take over.
Sometimes, the hardest thing is not accepting an imperfection. It is recognizing when the desire to change has gone too far.
