For decades, his face could make audiences laugh, scream, or simply stare in disbelief. He was theatrical, unpredictable and impossible to forget. Now, one of Hollywood’s most distinctive performers is gone.
The British actor died at his Los Angeles home at the age of 80. News of his passing was confirmed on August 26, with reports saying no foul play is suspected. His exact cause of death has not been publicly revealed.
His journey began in England, where he studied drama before finding his way onto London’s stage. But everything changed when he stepped into the role that would define an entire generation: Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show. When he reprised the character for the 1975 film, his performance became legendary, turning the movie into a cultural phenomenon.
But that was only the beginning.
He later terrified millions as Pennywise in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s It, while also appearing in Clue, Home Alone 2, Muppet Treasure Island, Annie and countless animated productions.
Then, in 2012, a devastating stroke changed his life and left him dependent on a wheelchair. Yet he continued working and sharing his memories, including through his memoir Vagabond.
The actor was Tim Curry—a performer whose voice, presence and unforgettable characters will remain long after his final curtain.
